Cupra-Leon

Some cars whisper, others talk. The Cupra Leon shouts , in a refined Spanish accent with turbocharged clarity. You don’t merely drive this car; you engage in a kind of mechanical flirtation. It lures you with wild eyes, dances around corners, and when it’s time to get serious, it digs in, delivers, and leaves a trail of tire, scorched memory behind.

I had a week with two variants of the Cupra Leon , the punchy VZ 2.0 TSI five, door and the Sportstourer e, Hybrid , and I chose the Beckum Hills for a reason. These rolling Westphalian heights, stitched together with tight switchbacks, broad rural stretches, and elevation changes that mimic a proper mountain stage, were the perfect theatre for Cupra’s firebrand hatchback and its more sensible plug, in sibling. Here, far from autobahn monotony, the Cupra Leon could show us everything it’s made of , from raw power to plug, in poise.

The Cupra Leon: A VW Golf’s Mad Cousin

It’s easy to dismiss the Cupra Leon as just another Golf in drama class. But don’t. While it shares the MQB platform with the VW Group’s greatest hits , the Golf, Audi A3, and Skoda Octavia , the Cupra Leon brings its own agenda. This isn’t about refinement or value. It’s about youth. Edge. Swagger.

You get two body styles: a five, door hatch for those who like their fun short and snappy, and the Sportstourer wagon for drivers who want hot, hatch energy with room for a dog, a weekend bike, and that spontaneous road trip to the Alps.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First, meet the wild child: the Cupra Leon VZ 2.0 TSI.

VZ 2.0 TSI: The Front, Wheel Drive Firecracker

Drop into the bolstered bucket seats, thumb the start button, and the 2.0, liter turbocharged four, cylinder clears its throat. It sounds serious , not obnoxious, not synthetic, but purposeful. Paired to a seven, speed dual, clutch DSG, the VZ (short for veloz, Spanish for fast) puts down 245 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque through the front wheels.

Out in the Beckum Hills, this setup felt intoxicating. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h is dispatched in 6.4 seconds, but what impressed me most was the mid, range pull. From 60 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, it surged through tight second, gear corners like a caffeinated terrier chasing a squirrel. The chassis didn’t whimper either. The adaptive dampers stiffened up when needed, softening on the flatter farm lanes that cut between the hills.

Even better, the steering was sharp without being twitchy. In Cupra mode, it gave me proper feedback. Not quite as talkative as an old hydraulic rack, but for an electric system , and for a hot hatch , it was more than adequate.

Yet, it wasn’t all riot. Cruising back down toward Beckum village in Comfort mode, the Cupra Leon mellowed. The DSG shifted lazily, the suspension softened, and the exhaust hushed. This car wears two faces. I liked both.

Plug, in e, Hybrid Sportstourer: The Fast Family Hauler

Midweek, I swapped the VZ for the Sportstourer e, Hybrid , the grown, up, electrified Leon. This one pairs a 1.4, liter turbo petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 245 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The gearbox here is a six, speed DSG, and it’s a front, wheel, drive affair again.

What stood out immediately was the silence. Gliding out of town on battery power alone felt eerie at first , especially coming straight from the crackling VZ. But the electric mode is smooth, responsive, and more than enough for errands or the daily commute. Cupra claims 59 km of electric, only range, and I squeezed out 54 km without even trying, mixing in some minor hills and stops.

But flick into Sport or Cupra mode, and the e, Hybrid’s personality does a backflip. That electric torque fills in gaps while the 1.4, liter engine spools up. From 0 to 100 km/h in seven seconds flat, it’s not as frantic as the TSI, but it’s quick enough to surprise. And there’s a weight to the way it moves , thanks to the battery pack , that actually made it feel more planted on long sweepers.

Still, all that torque overwhelms the front wheels at launch. Flooring it from a stop meant the traction control worked overtime to keep things tidy. In wet conditions, it was a squeal, fest.

Living With the Leon

Despite the sporty pretensions, both versions of the Cupra Leon are usable daily drivers. The five, door offers decent rear legroom, though six, footers will find headroom tight. The Sportstourer? That’s where practicality shines. Even the e, Hybrid, which sacrifices some boot space to the battery, offers 470 liters of trunk room , and I fit my full, size mountain bike inside with both wheels off and the rear seats folded.

Cupra claims up to 1,450 liters of cargo space in the wagon when fully expanded. You could move house in it. The standard version goes even further with up to 1,600 liters , class, leading stuff.

The driving position in both cars is spot, on: low, supportive, and sporty. Visibility is excellent, and all controls fall easily to hand. But then comes the tech…

Digital System

The 10, inch touchscreen looks crisp, modern, and very Cupra with its copper accents and vivid icons. But usability? Let’s just say it took me half a day to figure out how to adjust the fan speed without swearing. Like many new VW Group models, climate controls are now part of the infotainment system. No knobs. No dials. Just submenus and guesswork.

Voice control answers to “Hola, hola,” which is cute until you accidentally trigger it while talking to your passenger about the tapas you had last weekend.

Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work flawlessly, and once I got used to the layout, things settled down. Still, I miss physical controls. Cupra, if you’re listening , give us back the buttons.

Cupra Leon in the Beckum Hills: A Driver’s Playground

Let me tell you: there’s nothing quite like powering through the bends of the Beckum Hills in a car that feels alive. The VZ begged to be thrashed. It sang up through the revs, shifted with rifle, bolt precision, and felt more at home leaned into a hairpin than most front, wheel, drive cars I’ve driven.

The e, Hybrid, on the other hand, surprised me with its dual personality. It’s a true Jekyll and Hyde. Use it around town and it’ll sip electrons. Take it to the hills, put it in Cupra mode, and it’ll chase the VZ , not neck and neck, but with intent.

But the roads did more than just showcase performance. They revealed character. This car isn’t clinical. It has quirks, attitude, and a playful edge. It doesn’t just tick boxes. It smiles while it’s ticking them.

Conclusion: The Cupra Leon Is More Than A Pretty Face

Cupra’s done more than dress up a Golf in copper accents. The Leon is a genuine performance contender with real, world usability. Whether you choose the loud and proud VZ 2.0 TSI or the pragmatic yet punchy e, Hybrid wagon, you’re getting a car that wants to be driven.

Sure, the tech could use refining, and the front, wheel, only layout can’t quite match the grip of AWD rivals when pushed. But these are small quibbles in a car that’s otherwise brimming with personality and performance.

I didn’t want to give it back.

Is the Cupra Leon just a rebadged Seat Leon?

No. While they share the MQB platform, the Cupra Leon features unique styling, suspension tuning, more powerful engines, and a sharper interior layout.

Which Cupra Leon is faster , the TSI or the e, Hybrid?

The 300 hp TSI is the fastest, with a 0, 100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds. The e, Hybrid is still brisk but prioritizes efficiency.

Can I drive the e, Hybrid Cupra Leon purely electric?

Yes, for up to around 59 km, depending on conditions and driving style.
